Understanding Dog Allergies

Rick’s Dog Deli Is A New Concept In Animal Nutrition

Our focus is to provide our clients with a food that is made from 100% USDA-inspected ingredients and cooked to human consumption standards. When preparing food, we follow all HACCP standards, which eliminates the risk of salmonella or e. coli transmission. We are authorized by the Florida Department of Agriculture to distribute commercial feeds and customer feeds within the State of Florida.

Our formulations are based off the recommendations set forth by the National Research Council, which reports directly to the FDA and our own proprietary research on breed-specific and ancestral diets. At Rick’s Dog Deli, we find AAFCO standards to be outdated. Further, they allow for ingredients such as by-products to be used in animal feed.

The dogs we feed eat the same quality foods we do!

All Of Our Breed-Specific Formulations Meet The Nutritional Requirements Of Your Dog

Therapeutic formulations are designed for long-term feeding as well. Each custom order is accompanied by our nutritional data form, which lists all nutrition facts, allowing you to make a more informed decision. An example of this form can be emailed directly to you.

Rick’s Dog Deli has researched hundreds of breeds of dogs, where the breed was developed, and what food groups were indigenous to the area. This information give us an idea of what each breed would have eaten while they were developed.

Using this simple technique eliminates many allergies and ailments associated with a commercial diet. Digestion is easier, as their bodies are genetically used to assimilating nutrients from these foods. If a dog has a sensitivity to a certain ingredient, we can eliminate or replace it with something that has equal nutritional value in the form of a custom order.

Our Therapeutic Formulations Are Excellent Alternatives To Commercial Prescription Diets

Our therapeutic formulations are excellent alternatives to commercial prescription diets.

Made from 100% USDA-inspected ingredients, these formulations contain natural ingredients such as ginger to help aid in digestion or turmeric for dogs with cancer. Also, all of our formulations can be tailored to a particular dog and its condition.

For example, if a dog develops pancreatitis, we can lower the protein and fat content while increasing the amount of natural digestive enzymes. We can also adjust our therapeutic diets based on the severity of the condition–increasing or decreasing nutrients as needed to suit a particular dog’s condition.

Therapeutic formulations can be customized to meet a particular dog’s situation as well.

For Dogs With Allergies Try “The Goat Protocol”

We at Rick’s Dog Deli like to use goat meat as the standard when determining if a dog has food allergies.

Goat is the #1 red meat in the world. It is low in fat and cholesterol. According to nutritional facts supplied by the USDA, one 3-ounce serving of goat meat contains 122 calories, 2.58 grams of fat, 23 grams of protein and 3.3 milligrams of iron. The same amount of chicken has 120 calories, 3.5 grams of fat and 0.5 milligrams of iron. The same serving of beef has 245 calories, 16 grams of fat, 23 grams of protein and 2.9 milligrams of iron, while pork has 310 calories, 24 grams of fat, 21 grams of protein and 2.7 milligrams of iron. Lamb provides 235 calories, 16 grams of fat, 22 grams of protein and 1.4 milligrams of iron.

Goat meat is used along with limited ingredients in a customized formulation designed to help identify allergies to certain foods, mainly proteins. Since goat meat is not commonly available to domesticated animals in the United States, it is the perfect protein source to use when determining allergies in dogs.

The standard protocol calls for the dog with the suspected allergies to consume nothing but the goat meat formulation for a period of eight weeks. During this time, owners should begin to notice their dog’s allergy symptoms to start to disappear.

The constant licking of the paws and the scratching of the ears should noticeably improve over the course of the eight week “cleansing” period. Over this time, the dog’s body is eliminating all allergens associated with the dog’s previous diet. Once all allergens are removed, proteins can be reintroduced to the dog to determine what foods the dog is allergic to.

For example, if chicken is reintroduced after the 8-week trial and the symptoms return, it is safe to assume the dog has an allergy to chicken. Through the process of elimination, one can determine which proteins cause the dog to have allergic reactions.
